Kaspar Kummer is back.  This 19th-century composer (1795-1870) is so obscure, he is missing from even the most detailed music history books.  But Red Cedar loves his chamber music & we’re determined to give him a come-back!  We find his music charming and have invited our favorite period players to join us.

Red Cedar Chamber Music performs chamber music by German composer Kaspar Kummer on Thursday, June 3 at the Sondheim Center, Fairfield. The concert starts at 8 pm.

Kaspar the friendly... features a revitalization of the music of composer Kaspar Kummer (1795-1870), who although very popular during his lifetime, is almost completely forgotten today. Each of Kummer’s compositions has its own style, yet uses a distinctive musical language that is uniquely Kummer. According to Red Cedar Chamber Music’s artistic director John Dowdall “We are very excited to breathe new life into Kummer’s delightful music and to present it on 19th-c. instruments using performance style from that era. Kummer, who learned how to play all the instruments as a young apprentice, does an excellent job of featuring each of the instruments in the melodic and harmonic texture of his music. As a guitarist, I especially enjoy his rich harmonies and the frequent melodic passages given to the guitar. We hope that this concert and the compact disc of Kummer’s music we record next week will help to restore the reputation of this ingenious, but neglected composer.”

Jan Boland and Douglas Worthen, flute, David Miller, viola, John Dowdall, guitar, and Loretta O'Sullivan, cello perform Serenades Op. 81 and 83 for flute, viola and guitar (and cello), Divertissement Op. 92 No.2 for two flutes and guitar, and the Quintetto Op. 75 for two flutes, violin, viola, cello and guitar.
