Tone Poems for Poet & Piano
The Candlelight Reading Series continues its monthly cutting edge poetry programming with a recital of “Tone Poems for Poet & Piano” on Friday and Saturday, June 9th and 10th, 2006, 8 PM at Revelations Coffeeshop & Bookstore, 112 North Main Street, Fairfield, Iowa in the piano room. Admission is free.
Freddy Niagara Fonseca will recite and occasionally sing his poetry with accompaniment and music by Nathanael Zumstein on piano. Also on the program are sung excerpts from “Love and God.”
Through the ages, countless poems have been set to music, but rarely improvised, alternating song and recitation, except maybe by the old bards and troubadours accompanying themselves on string instruments.
Tone poems then are narrative performance pieces wherein poet and pianist playfully co-create adventures in tone, improvisation and meaning. The generated emotion emanates as a single unified voice transcending poetry and music altogether.
Rather than settling into any particular mode, the program’s energy sprightly veers back and forth between wistful, chamber musical microcosms; expansive nature poetry on an almost symphonic scale; and sensual dance capriccios, light and humorous like bubbles in the air.
With the exploration of world poetry in mind, Freddy founded the Candlelight Reading Series in December 2004 to infuse greater vitality into the presentation of the well spoken word, and broaden the scope of poetry at large, connecting cultural traditions worldwide. Nathanael has a Masters of Music in Composition from Catholic University of America and plays violin in the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra.
