A Recital of Tone Poems with Violin & Piano
The Candlelight Reading Series presents a Recital of Tone Poems with Violin & Piano on two consecutive nights, Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, 2006, 8 PM at Revelations. Freddy Niagara Fonseca performs original poetry accompanied by pianist Nathanael Zumstein who has a Masters of Music in Composition from Catholic University of America and Sam Stevenson, violin and viola.
The pairing of poetry and music goes back centuries. Tone poems are narrative performance pieces wherein poet and musicians playfully co-create adventures in tone, improvisation and meaning. The generated emotion emanates as a single unified voice transcending poetry and music altogether.
Fonseca and Zumstein, who concertized as a duo in Illinois and Iowa more than a hundred times back in the 90s have taken this concept to a level of exquisite counterpoint and poise. In 1989, The Fairfield Ledger wrote, “At their best, Fonseca and Zumstein create an ensemble tautly woven, exhilirating, and nearly overwhelming.”
Their whimsical repertoire reveals abundance, warmth, humor, and an openness to life’s experiences that is most refreshing and uplifting. They were recently joined by violinist Stevenson and will be delighted to share these tone poems with you. Donations are appreciated.
