Walt Whitman
A Selection of His Longer Poems
On Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 8 PM, the Candlelight Reading Series presents an all Walt Whitman program with some of his longer poems at Revelations. A few weeks after the Emily Dickinson & Walt Whitman event back in April, a Whitman afficionado who attended expressed the wish to hear Freddy Niagara Fonseca recite some of Whitman’s longer poems.
Freddy made up his mind quickly to do so in August. He has chosen to tackle four poems: Song of the Open Road, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, I Sing the Body Electric, and Passage to India at this upcoming reading. The breadth of Whitman’s transcendental musings speaks in full force in those poems especially.
Excerpts from the famous Song of Myself will also be heard, giving the listener a chance to tune into the more concise, philosophical side of Whitman’s writings. Guest reader John Roberts will read the shorter pieces. If time permits, there will be an opportunity to enjoy encores and take requests from the audience for more Whitman.
