Portuguese Poetry with Translations
On Friday, December 16, 2005, 8 PM, the Candlelight Reading Series presents a bi-lingual reading of mostly 20th century poetry from Portugal, Brazil and Mozambique performed in Portuguese with translations in English at Revelations.
“Portugal is a land of poets.” For such a small country, it’s amazing that Portugal publishes about as many poetry collections a year as America.
Enlightened resignation paired to a vague sense of “saudade” (longing for spiritual, and worldly, identity) pervade much of Portuguese poetry. The language is very mellifluous and fascinating to listen to. Raquel Valls will recite the poems in the original Portuguese. Freddy Niagara Fonseca reads the translations. Admission is free.
